Gnaouas Festival

Essaouira is famous due to this festival which attracts several hundred thousand visitors from around the world to hear the Gnaouas Masters perform their sacred mystical music. Performances are held all around the town, but principally on stage in the two main Medina squares. The festival is free (except for some private concerts – “The Lilas”). Major Artists have already attended the previous Gnaoua festivals Louis Bertignac Cheb khaled, Pat Metheny, Chen Marni, Donald Harrison, Maälem Mustapha Bakbou, etc.

Arts & Crafts

Essaouira has attracted the best of artistic talent and originality in Morocco. Its many galleries are filled with the dynamic creativity of local artists. Shops are filled clothing, textiles, carpets, marquetry, carving, leather goods, raffia, etc. The Medina is alive with the production of talented Moroccan artists.

Argan Oil

The Arganier tree produces a nut from which the fruit is crushed to produce oil. Used for cooking it imbibes a subtle hazelnut flavour and as a cosmetic has excellent anti-aging qualities and skin hydration.
The quality of the lives of the women in the co-operatives producing this oil are vastly improved by its sales.

Hammam & Spa

The hammam is a veritable Moroccan institution open to all. The perfect place to relax.

Cooking

Cooking in Essaouira is a real art form with regional specialities such as fish dishes, tagines, couscous, pastries and of course argan oil.

Museum

The Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah Museum, a former residence of the chiefs of Essaouira is the location fort culture, art and craftsmanship reflecting the region.
The wood room displays the tool used for the thuya woodwork which has made Essaouira craftsmanship famous. Also are views and photographs of Essaouira and its surroundings showing the wealth of the city at the start of the 20th Century.
There are displays of carpets, traditional outfits, weapons, and contemporary paintings.
